| August ‘02 - An Opportunity for Life |
Sikshana has announced scholarships to three children, who passed out of the Upper Primary school in Arahalli in the State open examinations at the 7th Grade level with distinction. They are Deepika, Premalatha and Shobha. The children will continue to get Rs 150 per month till the end of their school term, subject to satisfactory performance in the high school. An important aspect to note: All of them are girls in a rural community; in the existing system, they had a high chance of dropping out of school due to sociological pressure from the parents and the community. The award of scholarship ensures that they now stand a good chance of completing school and going for vocational training or to a professional course.

| Sikshana Expands |
| The month saw formation of a volunteer force, thanks to a news report in the Deccan Herald. As many as 22 persons called in and expressed their interest to participate in Sikshana, out of which seven have now started their work in the field. After a meeting with the Head masters of the schools and active members of the Trust held on 10th Aug 02, each one of them has taken up the responsibility of following up our program in one or two schools each. Thus the first step towards ‘broadening’ of Sikshana has been taken! Many of these are capable of taking up replication of the model through launching of new nodes in the City on their own, which happens to be our next goal.
