Dec ‘02 -  Ittimadu School- Phase I completed

The school in Ittimadu was adopted by us only in July 02. It was found that the many of the kids have to sit it out in the open for want of class rooms and under these circumstances, it would have been obviously impossible to undertake any meaningful activity towards improving the leaning levels and the quality of education here.We made a commitment to ourselves that we will construct at least two class rooms immediately, so that all kids can have a roof over their heads. In just four months, we have been able to realize this dream, thanks to the tireless efforts and the generosity of many who stood behind us on this project. The new class rooms were inaugurated on Dec 02, at a simple function which was organized and handled solely by the kids themselves.

Even after completion of this building, the classes will continue to be cramped for want of adequate space. Hence we propose to take up construction of a second floor over the new building to release the pressure for the existing strength as well as to meet the needs of the new admissions by the start of the next academic year. This project entails an additional cost of Rs 85,000; offers have started to come in to help us out on this second phase of the school construction. We stand committed to completing this project by the end of the current academic year

There is one aspect of this project which stands out: we got a news paper report to be released on the pathetic state of this school right in the midst of the city on 1st Aug 02. The response to this was overwhelming, resulting in our being able to raise the necessary resources. All of this go to show that people here in the City still do care!

This function was also covered by the Press; the report can be accessed at http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/dec07/s2.asp

Dec ‘02  - Quality Movement in Sikshana schools

As a special gesture to us, First Response and Confederation of Indian Industry sponsored a one-day training program on TQM concepts with focus on the Quality of Education in public schools at the primary level. This was conducted on 3rd Dec 02 at the Institute of Quality in Bangalore and attended by all the teachers from six Sikshana schools. Many observers including the volunteers of Sikshana were also present. The course elicited tremendous enthusiasm from the participants who showed keen interest in interacting with the Course Director, Dr Senthil Kumar, and sharing with him their views and problems. Each school has come up voluntarily with an action plan to comprehensively improve the standards prevailing in each discipline, with corresponding commitments on the part of individual teachers. The general feeling is that we have taken a significant step in progressing towards the Mission Goal underlying Sikshana. With the impending publication of the programs in various schools and a proposed audit on the impact of this workshop on the participants, you can look forward to hearing more on this on the coming days!
