Delhi Quiz competition for 3500 children (Aug 7)
Nearly 3500 children from 300 higher primary rural schools in Karnataka under the Sikshana programme took part in the annual Delhi Tour Quiz competition. Tests were conducted in Kanakapura, Hoskote, Anekal, Chikballapur and Kalghatgi taluks. The programme, now in its fifth year, has become one of the most anticipated Sikshana events of the year.
The competition is open to children from Stds 6 and 7, who typically prepare for a full year. The benefits of the Delhi trip extend beyond the obvious. This year the competition was conducted for the first time in Hoskote and Anekal. We are very appreciative of the contribution made by the Education Department in Hoskote and would like to thank the BEO, Mr Basavaraju, and the Department, who took on the responsibility of ensuring a well run competition for the nearly 700 children in the taluk. Mr Basavaraju took a personal interest in the event and formed a team of 13 cluster resource persons and 7 staff members to ensure smooth conduct of the event. In Anekal, when the news of the competition spread, a manager in a local bank organised a large hall free of cost and nearly 200 children from the taluk were able to take part in the event. In Kanakapura, we were very fortunate to have a large volunteer base to run massive events.
Sikshana expands intervention in Chikballapur to 38 schools with support from Monsanto Fund (July 31)
In the academic year 2009-10, we had 18 schools in Chikballapur participating in our programme. This year, with the year with help of a Monsanto Fund, the coverage was expanded to 38 schools in the district and 2 schools in Sahakarnagar in Bangalore, close to the research center of Monsanto.
The programme held in Chikballapur town was inaugurated by the BEO of Gauribidanur and presided over by Mr. P.M. Prakash, whose family, for the second consecutive year, continues to support 10 schools in the area. The event was well attended by Mr. Legh English, Director, Monsanto Research Centre, staff of Monsanto and staff of Sikshana Foundation. The whole programme, run by the teachers of the schools, became a 'Teachers Event' with teachers taking active part in the discussion on taking Sikshana forward in the district.
Annual Day event at Kanakapura (July 23)
The 6th Annual Day event of Kanakapura schools was the largest gathering this year with nearly 800 teachers taking part in the event. Primary and high school teachers from the 168 schools under Sikshana in the taluk took part in the event. Dr. Balasubramaniam of Swamy Vivekananda Youth Movement of HD Kote spoke on the occasion and motivated teachers to inculcate a love of learning amongst their students. This year the top 25 primary schools in the taluk were recognised and the Best School of the Year award went to Kottagalu Higher primary school, with Kaggalahalli High School winning the Best School in the High School category.
