Spot Prizes
Spot Prizes is one of the oldest and most popular of our school activities. (In fact, teachers have ranked this one of the most desirable Sikshana activities.) The way it works is very simple: school teachers are empowered to buy small, useful items for students (for up to 10% of the total funds allocated to the school) to be given as prizes. These items are available to all teachers in the school throughout the year, for use in the classrooms. With the Sikshana recommendation that these prizes should reach a large percentage of students, teachers have come up with many unique ways to reward students. Examples: to reward a correct answers or good question, hundred percent attendance in a week, most neatly dressed child of the day and so on..

 

Library Movement
The idea is to build your own school’s library and the initiative is unique because children are allowed to choose the books they would like in the library. This programme initially started off with few students from each rural school being brought to a big bookstore in Bangalore. After an orientation, children were allowed to spend a few hours in the bookstore making their selections. As Sikshana expanded to cover 285 schools, the programme was modified: instead of going to a bookstore in Bangalore, book fairs were held at various villages and children made their selections there. This is highly empowering activity for the children—and results in schools getting the right type of books for their needs.

 

Writing Sheets
The latest and most successful programme under Sikshana is the sheet bank activity. Here the children are given a set of 5 to 15 sheets every Monday and encouraged to fill them in by the end of the week. These ‘used sheets’ can be exchanged for a fresh set the following week. This initiative has taken off extremely well—with quantified results showing a drastic improvement in the speed and quality of writing in the majority of students.
