Sikshana featured in Outlook Business Magazine

Sikshana started as an intervention in the year 2005 to create a model. It is now shaping up as a social enterprise where profit is the social impact. More than that we feel there is a strong case for the government to partner with us to ensure delivery of quality education across all the government schools. It is therefore no surprise that Sikshana has been featured as one of the 24 good businesses in India in Outlook Business Independence Day Special issue dated Sep 1, 2012. Sikshana’s impact on government high schools this year 2011-12

The academic year 2011-12, has ended on a high note for Sikshana, with several government schools adopted by Sikshana showing exemplary results in SSLC Board exams. The teachers and children of our adopted government schools have responded well to our initiatives. The results achieved are largely due to their rigorous efforts.

This year, Sikshana adopted all the 103 government schools in Ramanagara, covering the entire district (with four taluks Kanakapura, Magadi, Channapatna and Ramanagara town) under the High School program. Similarly, 15 high schools in Kalghatagi taluk, near Hubli, have also been included in the High School program.

An overview of SSLC board examination results in Sikshana Schools
Area/Block No. of Schools No. of Students Pass Avg. Schools with 100% pass
Channapatna 22 1,397 92.0% 6
Magadi 21 930 80.0% 2
Ramanagar 26 1,430 79.0% 1
Kanakapura 34 1,681 89.0% 7
Ramanagar District Total 103 5,458 83.6% 16
Kalghatagi Taluk 15 918 91.0% 3

The result Sikshana Foundation cherishes:

In Ramanagara district alone, 1700 students were identified in the beginning of the year, to be at risk of not passing the Board exams out of the total 5438. With timely intervention and rigorous monitoring, the risk group number reduced from 1700 to 971. Of this 918 students passed the exams. Similarly in Kalghatgi taluk out of 288 students, who were identified to be at risk of not passing the exams, 204 students passed. More on road to success...

All primary schools set a target of having every child in class 7 be able to perform a 2 digit division and also be able to read level 2 kannada (or Telugu in Hyderabad) fluently. Data from 413 schools under Sikshana intervention is shown below. The results are well above the state and national averages and the schools are well on their way to ensure that no child from a Sikshana primary school will enter high school without the basic language and math skills.
